Cha Myoung-Jin

Cho Soo-Jin
Abstract
Migraine is a common cause of disability in everyday activities, impairment of quality of life, and loss of productivity. Migraine also is a substantial burden on healthcare system, workplace, society, and family. The economic costs of patients with migraine are classified as direct and indirect costs. Direct costs are related to use of medical resources such as physician or emergency room visits, procedure for diagnosis or treatment and medication. Indirect costs are related with reduced productivity and social activities and also burden to caregivers or family. Due to under-diagnosis and under-treatment, indirect cost of migraine is usually higher than direct costs. Recently developed new migraine-specific medications are expected to reduce indirect cost of migraine. We reviewed the U.S and Europe studies on the economic burden of migraine to help future research.
